this show irks me. not only does it derive it's title from a horse book; but it also uses the horse training priciple of lunging and applies it to dogs. not the same animal - lunging settles the horse down so he is more apt to listen to your cues - tiring out a dog has the opposite effect.

plus i never saw a show in which he ever solved a dog running off problem other than recommending they get rid of it because they were the problem. i got a pointer that's so birdy he will run off after them and clear 7 ft fences to chase them. he always comes back home, but i can't control his instincts without keeping him outside on a long run line (which he seems to enjoy, but the dog whisperer poo-poos.) he is a perfect dog, otherwise. smart and funny, protective, yet affectionate.

but the thing i have the most problem with his with him breaking up dog fights. now, my dogs fought sometimes when they were introduced. they didn't last long. i sure as hell wouldn't reach in with my hand and grab one. you aren't solving anything. they need to work out their own pecking order unless you have a truely insane dog who just wants to do damage - well, i still wouldn't reach into that mess. well, anyways, the cats, dogs, horses, parrots....they all seem to work everything out with each other and your role is just to make sure they don't kill each other. a fight now and again is natural, yes, even in a wild pack. a killing of another member is not.

it just got me riled when my son was playing with our older little mutt and it got to the point where the dog was tired and snapped at him for real (as older dogs will, sometimes) just as i told him to lay off the dog the young pointer came flying out of the bedroom and attacked the older little mutt. i called him off. he obeyed, but the mutt didn't have enough and whent in for more, at which point my son desided to grab him and got bit, by the little mutt. i let them finish their tiff (about 45 seconds or so) - no injuries except my son - the dog whisperer can do it...well, no accounting for idiots...they don't show him getting bit. the pointer was just trying to protect us and the old man was just old and pissed off. he wasn't hurt at all. there was no latching onto and biting hard - just a posturing display. we don't have that protective covering they do.

jeez, i'd like to see him in a pig pen when they are biting at your feet they are so pissed off for whatever reason....can he be a pig whisper too? should i reach down and remove them, or just wear steel toes and carry a pig bat?(riding crop)

ps - if they are actual training principles that actually work, why is there a disclaimer? uh, i've read many, many dog, horse, cat and parrot training manuals and none, repeat none of them had a disclaimer. i guess that's because they were written by professionals. let me tell you, if he reached out and poked me in the chest and said "shhhh" he'd be walking really funny for a while.
